The casual meetup quickly became a vehicle for Caroline’s songwriting\, and the trio would regularly sneak into the dusty unfinished basement of their apartment building to jam (don’t tell our ex-landlord!). With the addition of Stephen Bennett (of bands Robert Samantha and God’s Furniture) on lead guitar\, the group hit the circuit and played increasingly-hyped shows in the greater Portland\, ME area. With strong vocals and heavy hooks\, Lolabelle’s music is both bittersweet and deeply visceral\, cathartic but also fun and full of driving energy. \n\n\n\nPlaying venues ranging from the highly-established (Blue Portland Maine\, The Apohadion Theater\, The Portland Club\, Hey Sailor! and the Starboard Lounge\, Hi-Fidelity\, Fogtown Brewing Company\, to name a few) to the totally DIY (basements\, house parties\, driveway shows\, you name it)\, Lolabelle is sure to pack a punch and bring the party with their high-energy live show. Just as important to the music is the handmade/homemade spirit infused in the band– whether it’s the limited edition shirts Caroline screen-printed-on-demand at a backyard fest\, or the film photo you spot of yourself in the crowd at a driveway show\, or the zine you picked up from the merch table. Bluegrass and American Folk music originated from the group’s home\, and now JigJam is here to take it back! \n\n\n\nJigJam made its Grand Ole Opry Debut in Nashville in March 2023 to critical acclaim receiving a standing ovation from a sold-out crowd on Country Music’s biggest stage. The group was joined on the night by Garth Brooks\, Trisha Yearwood\, Steve Earle\, Lauren Alaina\, and many more. He has long been a quiet force in American folk music; a musician’s musician\, a writer’s writer\, and a seeker whose gift lies in making the personal feel universal. \n\n\n\n​With the release of The Way I Tell the Story (2025)\, Wilcox proves\, yet again\, that resilience isn’t just a survival skill—it’s an art form. The record shimmers with musical sophistication but leaves just enough space for the listener to feel what Wilcox has always done best: tell the truth\, gently but without apology.The music he’s creating now comes from a place that can’t be faked. In recent years\, Wilcox’s life has been shaped by his wife’s Parkinson’s diagnosis—a shift that reordered his priorities and redefined his sense of time\, love\, and presence. His albums\, released on Free Dirt Records and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings\, have been featured in best-of lists from NPR\, The New Yorker\, and Rolling Stone. His scholarly publications include “Jail the Zombie: Black Banjoists\, Biopolitics\, and Archives\,” published in Modern American History. He also served as a music consultant for the movie Sinners\, and performed on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’s The American Revolution. Blount holds an A.M. in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from Brown University\, where he is working toward a Ph.D. in the same and a second master’s degree in Anthropology. The band sprung up in New York’s legendary Hudson Valley\, set in the middle of a thick American musical heritage. To their inland West was the Ashokan reservoir folk tradition\, and across the river to the East the legacy of Pete Seeger and the Clearwater. Just north of them was Woodstock and Big Pink\, and all the treasured inheritance of Bob Dylan and the Band. Just south was Tony Falco’s famed venue the Falcon\, a refuge and respite for some of the most venerable jazz legends like Sonny Rollins or Joe Lovano. From the first\, Upstate drew liberally from everything each corner had to offer. \n\n\n\nWith their first record\, A Remedy\, they were known for three-part female vocal arrangements recalling “not only the serpentine sibling harmonies of the Roches\, but of the Andrews and Boswell sisters.” They were otherwise known for an eclectic arrangement of instruments weaving together upright bass\, mandolin\, cajon and baritone saxophone. By their second record Healing\, they were likened to Lake Street Dive and “Manhattan Transfer meets Loretta Lynn.” For their third\, You Only Get a Few\, they drew comparisons to the sound of Laurel Canyon\, another American musical landmark on the other side of the continent. This time they had shed the eclectic instrumentation in favor of traditional drums and guitars. \n\n\n\nAfter 15 years\, three records\, nearly a dozen former members\, and one name change\, Upstate could almost seem unrecognizable were it not for the constancy of their songs. Original members Melanie Glenn\, Harry D’Agostino\, and Mary Webster have been writing and playing music together throughout all the upheavals in the band and their lives. It’s their shared dedication to writing songs of lasting value that has persisted across all the changes to their sound. When Dylan Mckinstry finally joined the band in the years of the COVID pandemic\, his enthusiasm for that commitment made it the band’s lasting cornerstone. \n\n\n\nOn their upcoming Abalone\, Upstate draws on the best of what has marked the band in all its many eras. Gorka’s powerful baritone and poignant songwriting earned early acclaim\, especially after winning the New Folk Award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1984. Originally based in Santa Cruz\, California\, the group met as teenagers\, picking and jamming together as kids at local bluegrass festivals until one day\, they decided they would be a band. After almost a decade on the road\, they have established themselves as one of the most exciting and dynamic groups in Bluegrass. \n\n\n\nThe band is AJ Lee on mandolin\, fiddler Jan Purat\, Sullivan Tuttle on guitar\, and Sean Newman on Bass. The band pays tribute to their California roots with a steaming Bluegrass version of New Riders of the Purple Sages “Glendale Train” featuring Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway’s own Kyle Tuttle (no relation!). Sully Tuttle\, Molly’s younger brother\, takes the lead on the early jazz burner “Who Walks In (When I Walk Out)” which features inspiring guest appearances from Grammy Award winning guitarist Trey Hensley and renowned flutist Ahn Phung. AJ takes back the lead on a striking rendition of the country classic “Takes One to Know One”. The Voices embrace a diversity of styles\, from big band jazz to post-bop\, from Brazilian jazz to the singer-songwriter repertoire of Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder\, to their own tuneful originals. In the beginning\, their live shows featured a compact rhythm section\, and they had no plans to perform with big bands or symphony orchestras. That changed in the fall of 1994 when the group was invited to sing two songs with the Count Basie Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.  \n\n\n\nThe Voices have multiple recordings with big bands and have developed a diverse and extensive library of arrangements that feature this sort of collaboration. For decades\, they have performed all over the world\, including concerts and tours with the WDR and SWR Big Bands in Germany\, the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands\, the USAF Airmen of Note\, Norway’s Trondheim Jazz Orchestra\, and many other notable orchestras\, including the Portland Jazz Orchestra.  \n\n\n\nNow\, after nearly four decades of concerts\, world tours\, 11 landmark albums under their own name\, and high-profile collaborations with international jazz masters\, this Grammy Award winning group will be performing with the Portland Jazz Orchestra as part of their Grand Finale tour.
