    The Portland Jazz Orchestra: September


    Started in 2004, the Portland Jazz Orchestra is Maine's premier concert jazz ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Chris Oberholtzer, this 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO enjoys playing works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider.     $pellcheck w/ Sea Level (Dan Capaldi)


    $pellcheck is an experimental pop band out of the Twin Cities and Cleveland. Martin Dosh (Andrew Bird, Dosh, The Cloak Ox) plays keys, loops and percussion. David King (The Bad Plus, Happy Apple, Craig Taborn) plays drumset. Mike Sopko (Bill Laswell, Glimpse Trio, Yellowstone Apocalypse) plays guitars. Formed as the brainchild of Dosh and Sopko, with the idea of splitting an LP up between covers, originals and improvs, their debut was recorded over 2 days at the Terrarium in Minneapolis. The bands they decided to cover are all over the place, everyone from the Heartless Bastards to Squarepusher receive their unusual treatment, running the gamut from ballads to freakouts.
