An exciting triple bill of local songwriters!
CONNOR GARVEY TRIO
“The songs of Connor Garvey have that rare and balanced blend of refreshing lyric, inventive guitar work, and mesmerizing grooves, all powered by his clear and agile singing voice. Ranging from funky to sensitive, serious to playful, they convey the kind of inspiration found in a reverent pursuer of life's depths and joys. Whether it's hearing him live on stage or on one of his recordings I'm always uplifted and amazed." - Chris Cunningham - Storyhill & Basecamp Recording

The Tarbox Ramblers

The Tarbox Ramblers

Friday, April 25, 2014 8:00 PM
Taking listeners to a place where Appalachian music, ancient blues and gospel come together in powerful, unexpected combinations, The Tarbox Ramblers are left-field traditionalists whose rough-hewn, direct sound has drawn raves from Rolling Stone, All Things Considered, The New Yorker and many more.
This is old-soul music, and in freewheeling shows at clubs and festivals throughout the US and Canada, The Ramblers have played it to considerable effect, making converts of audiences wherever they’ve gone. Robert Plant caught the group’s live show and asked them to open his tour dates right on the spot; he later tapped them as backing band for a set with Alison Krauss at The Rock Hall of Fame’s Leadbelly Tribute.

"Between the fiddle, string bass, drums and slide guitar, you won't know what hit you." - The New Yorker
"Intoxicatingly original... They take forgotten music and breathe a freshness into it that lights up the room, causing folks to take a collective leave of their senses." - The Boston Globe

Ryan Montbleau

Details and Tickets

Ryan Montbleau

Saturday, April 26, 2014 8:00 PM

Vocal styles reminiscent of the ‘70s, funky R&B with stripped down blues songwriting in a rare solo acoustic performance!

Just Announced! Tall Heights, from Boston will be opening for Montbleau.

Ryan is one of the lucky musicians who experimented with singing in college, and discovered the creation of music at the right time. In 1999, he began playing and working in the House Of Blues in Boston. From there, he started playing with a percussionist which would be the birth of the Ryan Montbleau Band. The group debuted their first collective album, One Fine Color in 2006.
Ryan has opened for groups like John Hammond, Melissa Ferrick, Ani DiFranco, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Martin Sexton!
What makes him so interesting is both the songwriting, and how he plays his songs. He does both acoustic shows, and shows with the whole band. As with many artists, an acoustic show provides different versions and experiences with songs than when he has his funky-Americana fueled band behind him. His voice suits both types of shows, with his jazzy soulful tone. Whether you’re listening to him play in a coffee shop, or rocking a festival in the middle of July, the one thing that will be consistent is his ability to bring it. (from Shakedown Blog)

Blending uncommonly beautiful vocals with one of the sharpest poetic sensibilities in her field, Duvekot has a remarkable ability to make us believe she is whispering secrets in our ear, and we know that she believes every word she sings. Antje's newest CD is called "New Siberia" and was produced by Richard Shindell who says, "What a blessing to have worked with someone as talented as Antje. With a voice like hers, and songs as good as these, a producer just tries to get out of the way, to do no harm, and to let the artist speak for herself."

Kids & Teens Open Stage

Saturday, May 03, 2014 12:00 PM

The Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) and One Longfellow Square (OLS) are excited to announce that they are partnering on a new program called "Kids & Teens Open Stage". This program, made possible by a grant from the Davis Family Foundation, kicks off in January and will allow students an opportunity to perform live on the OLS stage, either as solo performers or with their full bands.

Each Kids & Teens Open Stage will also feature a performance by a different artist or band from Portland's thriving local music scene. MAMM & OLS are hoping that this will help to fill the void in Portland's all-ages music scene, as there are very few opportunities for young students to see local musicians perform live.

The shows will kick off at 12 pm and admission will cost $5. Students who sign up to perform attend for free.
For more information or to sign up to perform at the Kids & Teens Open Stage event, call MAMM at 899-3433 or email - info@maineacademyofmodernmusic.org.

Opener Anders Parker

ANDERS PARKER is a singer/songwriter from Burlington, VT. Fourteen years into his career, Bladen County Records is proud to announce the release of his twelfth album – the double concept LP Skyscraper Crow. The Crow portion of the set is unadorned acoustic folk simplicity at it’s finest, and Skyscraper is totally computer generated laptop pop. While the albums are, at least aesthetically, diametrically opposed, both remain distinctly the work of Parker.

Live & Local with Pete Miller & Christian Cuff

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 8:30 PM
Christian Cuff is renowned for live performances that deftly blend light-spirited banter with powerhouse pieces that are at times dark, brooding and aggressive. His music draws its roots in the rugged coastline of Maine and the gritty streets of New York City, and these backgrounds are reflected in the honesty, raw emotion, and quick wit inherent in Cuff’s work. Haunting and evocative, Cuff’s lyrics tell narratives of grace and despair, rendered through moments of biting humor and irony. His music drives and pushes forward, combining entrancing harmonies, eclectic instrumentation and intricate rhythms into complex pieces that buzz with energy.

A blend of indie and folk, Pete Miller's songs explore the unmasking of human tendencies. His lyrically clever offerings delve into the raw nature of humans: exposing, proposing, desiring, and accepting. Miller's determined approach and desire to transcend traditional music boundaries have established him as a prominent, emerging local musician.

Joe Walsh, Brittany Haas & Owen Marshall with Lauren Rioux and Lincoln Meyers

Saturday, May 17, 2014 8:00 PM
Fantastic string music double bill!
In Brittany Haas, Owen Marshall, and Joe Walsh, we find a veritable folk music power trio. As masters of old-time, Celtic, and bluegrass music, all three musicians are widely respected on their chosen instruments (fiddle, guitar, and mandolin). Their collaboration aims to explore the common ground between their musical traditions.
Bringing years of experience playing all over the globe with acoustic acts such as Crooked Still, the Gibson Brothers, Joy Kills Sorrow, Abigail Washburn, Andrea Beaton, Rodney Miller, and The Press Gang, this trio creates a body of music as electric as any acoustic band can hope to be.

Lauren Rioux fiddles from the heart with soul and joy. This, in combination with her warm tone, elegantly expressive phrasing and playful style, leads her to create music that artfully explores themes of both heartache and hope. On her debut album, All the Brighter, Lauren presented a beautiful collection of melodies that embrace and celebrate the richness of life. Rooted in the old-time tradition, and drawing inspiration from a wide swath of musicians, from Sam Cooke to Hillary Hahn, her music is at once timeless and fresh. Sten Isak is a woodworker as well as being a singer and guitarist. The two were married last year and continue to make beautiful music together.

Live & Local with The Mallett Brothers Band

Tuesday, May 20, 2014 8:30 PM
The Mallett Brothers Band is an alt-country/rock band from Portland, Maine. Slightly more rock than country, theirs is a musical melting pot that's influenced equally by the folk and singer/songwriter influence of brothers Luke and Will's dad David Mallett - himself a noted musician - as by the harder rock, punk and even psychedelic influences of the other band members. Brian Higgins on drums, Nick Leen on bass, Wally on dobro and electric guitar and Nate Soule on electric and acoustic guitars and mandolin. It's song-driven music that holds up under the lens of solitary listening, but that's equally apt to crank a room full of rockers into whiskey-fueled high gear.

Girls, Guns & Glory With Sarah Borges

Friday, June 06, 2014 8:00 PM

For the past eight years, Boston’s rising stars Girls Guns and Glory have been making a name for themselves through relentless touring (about 200 gigs a year worldwide), the release of four critically acclaimed records, a slew of local awards, including being the Boston Music Awards first act of its genre to win Act of the Year, and international awards (Independent Artist of the Year at the French Country Music Awards). And, now, the hard-working band is refining their focus to the roots of rock ‘n’ roll with a twist of country on their fifth album, “Good Luck,” due on February 4, 2014 on Lonesome Day Records.

As cliché as it may be, absence makes the heart grow fonder couldn't be a more genuine statement for singer/songwriter Sarah Borges as she embarks on her next musical adventure, the release of her new album, "Radio Sweetheart." After a year away from pouring her heart and soul into her music, penning her emotions into powerful lyrics, and leaving it all on the stage during rivetinglive shows, her love for her craft grew that much stronger.

Soule Monde

Details and Tickets

Soule Monde

Friday, June 27, 2014 8:00 PM
Soule Monde is instrumental, organ-driven funk in its purest form.

Erupting from the syncopated minds of power-drummer Russ Lawton and organ-wizard Ray Paczkowski, who most recognizable from their years of touring together as members of The Trey Anastasio Band, which fervently cemented these two into an indestructible pocket. The duo take soul-jazz back to the deep end. Forged off a sound that originated with Booker T. and Jimmy Smith, yet highly influenced by the redeveloped grooves crafted by Medeski, Martin & Wood and The Beastie Boys, Soule Monde is the ideal union of swagger and raw talent, featuring bold improvisational leaps by either player that are met by near-telepathic response from the other. These strut-worthy rhythms are further accentuated by a passionate longing for melodic story arcs. So while their songs will make your ass shake like a Jello plate on the San Andreas Fault, they will also take you on a narrative journey of harmonic exploration.

Ellis Paul is one of the leading voices in American songwriting. He was a principle leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene, creating a movement that revitalized the national acoustic circuit with an urban, literate, folk pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990's.

"Wise, tender, brilliant and biting, Ellis is one of our best human compasses, marking in melodies and poems where we've been and where we might go if we so choose to."
