Maine Marimba Ensemble performs complex polyrhythmic arrangements of traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean music on handcrafted marimbas.

Like many traditional forms of African art and expression, this music has deep roots that can be traced back for nearly a thousand years, if not more. Marimba music is composed on the m’bira, hosho, and ngoma. Inspired by dreams, the Shona people of Zimbabwe created this music as a means of communicating with the spirit world, giving thanks, and, in the 19th and 20th centuries, as a weapon against colonial rule and a path to liberation. As in many African cultures, music pervades all facets of life, with participation highly welcomed, encouraged, and embraced. As they say in Zimbabwe, “If you can walk, you can dance . . . If you can talk, you can sing!”

Maine Marimba Ensemble is: Jacob Wolff, Elliot Heeschen, Kevin Caron, Matt Wasowski, Peter Himmer, Rob Cimitile, Zebulon Kelley and Tchukki Andersen.
