James McMurtry’s The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy gathers a cast of sharply drawn characters—a Texas sheriff, a drifting mechanic, a haunted narrator—into a collection of story-songs rooted in scraps of his family history. Pulled from old poems, sketches, and memories of his father Larry McMurtry’s hallucinations, these details shape an album that’s both imaginative and intimately personal.
Recorded in Austin with his longtime band and produced by Don Dixon, the project mixes rugged Americana tones with McMurtry’s unmistakable dry wit. The sessions unfolded with a sense of spontaneity, capturing performances that feel lived-in and immediate, including a gripping cover of Jon Dee Graham’s “Laredo.”
A second cover, Kris Kristofferson’s “Broken Freedom Song,” bookends the album and nods to one of McMurtry’s earliest influences. Even the cover art—a rediscovered Ken Kesey sketch—ties the album back to his family’s creative past. Throughout, McMurtry follows the words wherever they lead, continuing the quiet, steady work that has made him a touchstone for generations of songwriters.
