Hayden Pedigo—guitarist, absurdist, and former Amarillo City Council candidate (and subject of Kid Candidate)—returns with I’ll Be Waving as You Drive Away, the latest in a trilogy following Letting Go (2021) and The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored (2023). Known for pushing instrumental guitar beyond its usual boundaries, Pedigo blends intricate fingerpicking with warped Americana, drawing from influences as wide-ranging as John Fahey, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, and experimental rap.
Written after years of touring and shaped during an isolated residency in Wyoming, the album is his most technically demanding and emotionally direct work to date. Stripping away past personas, Pedigo leans into something more personal—balancing maximalist, genre-defying compositions with moments of precision and restraint.
The final installment of his “Motor Trilogy,” I’ll Be Waving as You Drive Away reflects on identity, place, and departure, pulling from his upbringing in Amarillo and his evolving relationship to it. The result is a restless, inventive record that captures both the absurdity and sincerity at the core of Pedigo’s work.
