Celebrate the life and music of Johnny Fountain at One Longfellow Square on Saturday, December 22nd with the release of his posthumous album, The Grand Adventure. Johnny was a prolific Portland musician, who continued to perform around town even after his diagnosis of Stage IV colon cancer. Following his death in December of 2015, his friends and family united to finish the recordings he left behind, starting with 12 demos of original songs by Johnny. Produced by Dominic Lavoie (The Lucid, ShaShaSha) and Dan Boyden (Model Airplane, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds), the album features a cast of nearly two dozen musicians - including contributions from Lady Lamb, Jacob Augustine, Colin Winsor, and many more. At the center of it all is Johnny's voice, guitar, and zeal for adventure.
The album is being released digitally and on vinyl. The One Longfellow Square Listening Party - on what would have been Johnny's 36th birthday - will mark the first time the album has been played publicly. The night will also feature footage and photos of Johnny from throughout his musical career, from The Tower of Song to his final performance at Arootsakoostik South.
Who was Johnny Fountain? He was a light in our community. This is what he wrote on the occasion of his birthday, seven-months after his initial cancer diagnosis: Birthdays are fun and hooray for mine, but the 22nd of December has always represented something better. Yesterday, the solstice, is the longest night in our swing around the sun. The 22nd is the start of the journey back. From here on out, the weight of that swing gets a little bit lighter. Today is the day it starts getting brighter.
Celebrate the start of it getting brighter with the Johnny Fountain Grand Adventure Listening Party. The album will be available for purchase at the show and can be pre-ordered at johnnyfountain.com. In accordance with the Fountain family's wishes, a portion of the ticket sales will go to support SailMaine, a non-profit community sailing program in Maine.
