Back by popular demand, Rock My Soul performs its annual Rockin’ Holiday Concert at OLS. The group puts its own blues, soul, R&B, doo wop, and gospel stamp on holiday classics and contemporary favorites, weaving in rich harmony and lively musical arrangements that get audiences singing, stomping, and clapping along to the back beat. Many audience members now make this show a part of their family holiday tradition.
High-energy versions of songs will range from the Aretha Franklin-inspired “Joy to the World,” to Sharon Jones and the Dapp Kings’ “White Christmas,” to JD McPherson’s “Twinkle Little Christmas Lights.” Along the way, Rock My Soul presents original arrangements of lesser-known gems such as “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow.”
In contrast to the high-energy sound are introspective carols such as a Temptations-inspired arrangement of “Silent Night” and John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War Is Over).” Other audience favorites such as “O Holy Night” and a raise-the-rafters version of Brian Setzer’s “Boogie Woogie Santa Claus” will be included.
Based in Southern Maine, Rock My Soul draws upon the diverse traditions of Americana, roots, and gospel music, and is known for packing houses throughout New England. The group has been featured on NH Chronicle, 207, and Maine Public Radio, and one of its songs has also been featured in a PBS documentary entitledFreedom Songs: Music of the Civil Rights Movement. Backed by a band of top-flight musicians, the choir sings with a joy and intensity that will fill your heart. Definitely a show not to be missed!
