Those familiar with Lucy Wainwright Roche know her bell-tone voice, unshakable melodies, and wry, wise lyrics that cut straight to the heart. The daughter of Suzzy Roche (The Roches) and Loudon Wainwright III—and half-sibling to Rufus and Martha Wainwright—she grew up steeped in music. Yet, Lucy has carved her own path as a touring singer-songwriter, selling over 60,000 copies of her four acclaimed solo albums: Eight Songs, Eight More, Lucy, and There’s a Last Time for Everything.
Her other recordings include Songs In the Dark, a collection of lullabies with her sister Martha Wainwright, and three duet albums with her mother Suzzy Roche: Fairytale and Myth (Vox Pop Independent Music Award winner), Mud and Apples (IMA-nominated), and I Can Still Hear You, recorded in the darkest days of the COVID shutdown in 2020 and hailed as “one of the year’s best” by Americana Highways.
For over a decade, Lucy has built a devoted following across the U.S. and Europe, armed with a guitar, a deadpan sense of humor, and a voice that can make tough guys cry. She’s shared the stage with the Indigo Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Neko Case, and Rufus Wainwright—one of the rare few who can step in front of a thousand strangers and hold them rapt.
On her 2018 release Little Beast (winner of the 2019 Independent Music Award for Best Album, Singer-Songwriter/Folk), Lucy pushes the boundaries with an urgent, poetic collection of songs that feel downright cinematic. She shifts from flat-footed authenticity to raw, untamed energy, as if howling at the moon. The first single, Heroin, is a reckless, heart-racing ride through love’s dangerous terrain:
It’s the Million Dollar Highway on a snowy day
It’s why I had to go, it’s why I longed to stay
Standouts on Little Beast include Heroin, Quit with Me, In Relation to Disaster, Trouble, Behind the Wheel, and Ohio is for Lovers, but perhaps its most haunting track is Soft Line, a wrenching plea to a love slipping away:
Watch out or the sun will set
On the picture we tried to get
On the story of why we met…
There’s nothing “little” about Little Beast. It’s fierce, unflinching, and cements Lucy Wainwright Roche as a force to be reckoned with.

Abigayle Kompst:
A poet born in the heat of Las Vegas, Abigayle Kompst blends the melodic richness of folk pioneers with the lyrical honesty of today’s confessional singer-songwriters. Her songs explore the complexities of life and the existential questions that shape us, often with a sharp, tongue-in-cheek wit that adds layers of humor and insight. She has toured the US and Canada opening for acts such as The War and Treaty, Forest Blakk and now Lucy Wainwright Roche!
