Luke Bulla:

Luke Bulla has been immersed in music since childhood, touring with his family band at age four and picking up the fiddle at seven. A prodigious talent, he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Idaho six times in his age group, and became the youngest Grand Champion at sixteen. After moving to Nashville in 1999, he joined Ricky Skaggs’ band Kentucky Thunder—earning his first Grammy—and later played with the John Cowan Band. Over the years, Luke has collaborated with an impressive range of artists, including Brandi Carlile, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Rodney Crowell, and Lyle Lovett, with whom he toured as part of the Large Band from 2009 to 2023.

Beyond fiddle, Luke also plays guitar and mandolin, sings, writes songs, and has been active in multiple collaborative projects, including Wisechild and W.P.A., which featured members of Nickel Creek, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. In 2009, he released a solo EP with guest appearances from Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and Aoife O’Donovan, followed by his LP Who Loves You Better in 2016, released on his co-founded label Pure Music | Nashville. Now, Luke is back on the road and working on a new EP.

Michael Daves:

Born in Atlanta and steeped in the Southern bluegrass tradition, Michael Daves built his musical foundation staying up late and singing loud. Now based in Brooklyn, he’s been called “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by The New York Times, known for both his solo work and high-profile collaborations with Chris Thile, Steve Martin, Tony Trischka, and others. His 2016 release Orchids and Violence (Nonesuch) features two contrasting takes on traditional bluegrass tunes—one with acoustic roots luminaries like Sarah Jarosz and Noam Pikelny, and another with a raw, electric edge. Daves earned a Grammy nomination for Sleep With One Eye Open, his duo album with Thile.

Ongoing projects include a duo with mandolinist Jacob Jolliff, a long-running partnership with banjo legend Tony Trischka, and performances with artists like Brittany Haas, Chris Eldridge, and Bruce Molsky. A Hampshire College alum, Daves blends his experimental and jazz background with deep bluegrass roots. He’s also a dedicated teacher with over 25 years of experience, running an online bluegrass vocal school through ArtistWorks and offering detailed instruction in harmony, guitar, and ear training to students worldwide.
