Performing regularly at One Longfellow Square since 2006, the Portland Jazz Orchestra is Maine’s premier concert jazz ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Chris Oberholtzer, this 19-piece ensemble performs a wide range of instrumental and vocal big band literature. PJO enjoys showcasing works written by members and area musicians such as Craig Skeffington, Mike Sakash, Brad Ciechomski, Jake Sturtevent, and Terry White. In addition to performing original literature, the band often explores music from the libraries of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Bill Holman, Patrick Williams, Woody Herman, and Maria Schneider, among others.
This month’s performance highlights a special “West Coast” theme, featuring music inspired by bands and writers from the Left Coast, including the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Bill Holman, Natalie Cole, Bob Florence, Gerry Mulligan, and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. The evening will also feature guest vocalist Jaimie Appel, whose dynamic presence and warm tone bring an extra layer of artistry to the performance.
PJO is made up of professional musicians, many of whom are both performers and educators across New England. Members of the ensemble have performed, recorded, and toured with artists such as Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Wayne Bergeron, The New York Voices, Barry Manilow, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
In keeping with its educational roots, the Portland Jazz Orchestra is also available for clinics and performances throughout northern New England.
