What’s a Discovery Series show?
Our Discovery Series showcases artists you might not know yet – but we think you should! These shows are an opportunity to experience incredible emerging talent up close, with our longtime members enjoying preferred seating at our intimate café-style tables. It’s a great way to support independent artists while strengthening the musical community at One Longfellow Square!
Commissioned by Portland Ovations in 2023, somewhere/elsewhere is an original musical by librettist Kerem Durdag and composer Andy Happel that premiered to strong acclaim. The work explores the lived experience of immigration—displacement and belonging, love and loss—through music that prioritizes feeling over narrative convention. Drawing from Turkish and Pakistani musical worlds alongside rock and pop traditions, the songs function less as plot devices and more as emotional expressions meant to be fully felt.
This concert celebrates selections from the somewhere/elsewhere double album, recently released on streaming platforms and recorded by the original cast alongside the rock band Thanks to Gravity. Together, the music traces themes of love, longing, and heartache, capturing the tension of being both somewhere and elsewhere at once—of living in a place while still reaching for home.
The evening features cast members Nargiz Ali zada, Caroline Davis, Rachel Henry, Adam Kilgore, Felicia McLeod, and Colin Whiteman—acclaimed vocalists and stage performers—joined onstage by Thanks to Gravity. Known for pushing beyond traditional rock formats, the band’s work has included collaborations with orchestras, ballet companies, and symphony ensembles, bringing a wide-ranging musical sensibility to this performance.
This is an evening of original music that invites reflection, connection, and shared experience.
