Portland Ovations for its 2023 commissioned somewhere/elsewhere a musical from Kerem Durdag (librettist) and Andy Happel (music composer) which premiered to much acclaim and is an exploration of an experience; the experience of being an immigrant with all the immersion of displacement and love. Unlike western musicals, where songs perform a function of continuing the story narrative, for Kerem who deeply carries with him Turkish and Pakistani universes, together with a healthy amount of rock and pop music, the songs are expressions of feeling, they are to be felt. The propulsive energy composed by Andy is from the emoting and grasping for connection via that feeling; the songs are to be, perhaps one way, we can touch the face of our humanity.
The concert is a celebration of songs from the somewhere/elsewhere double album recorded by the cast and the rock band Thanks to Gravity and recently released on streaming services (e.g. Spotify) expressing the epic exploration of the love, longing, and heartache of being a stranger in a strange land. A person who, while always somewhere, is also always elsewhere.
On stage the following cast members who are veteran professional singers, stage performers and recording artists will be present together with Thanks to Gravity are: Nargiz Ali zada, Caroline Davis, Rachel Henry, Adam Kilgore, Felicia McLeod and Colin Whiteman.
Also on stage will be Thanks to Gravity who in 1997 (after three more albums) were signed to Capitol Records and EMI Publishing and has ventured into atypical rock band territory before, including scoring and performing a ballet, performing an original orchestral work with the New Hampshire Philharmonic, performing Thanks to Gravity songs arranged for orchestra with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra and more.
This will be an evening of original music to cherish and remember.
